Rose Quartz: The Gateway Stone

The first crystal in my collection was rose quartz, so it’s no surprise that it’s been called the perfect beginner’s stone. Popular and easy to come by, it exudes unconditional love and compassion.

Rose quartz is a macrocrystalline mineral belonging to the quartz family. It gets its name from its pale pink coloring and the Greek word “hyalos,” meaning glass. For this reason, it’s also called pink quartz, hyaline quartz, and the heart stone, as it stimulates and balances the heart chakra. A blocked heart chakra can harbor self-doubt, anger, jealousy, and other insecure feelings, while a balanced one helps us express our true selves and stay grounded.

Romans believed rose quartz was a gift from Cupid, introducing more love, passion, and happiness in our lives. Around 800 BC, the stone was used by the Assyrians to create jewelry, but rose quartz beads date all the way back to 7000 BC, found in modern day Iraq. The stone can be found across the globe, though is commonly sourced in places like Japan, Madagascar, Brazil, and the United States.

With its peaceful, soothing resonance, rose quartz strengthens our connection with the divine feminine and invites more warmth and beauty into our lives. It opens our hearts to give and receive more love, providing comfort and calling in emotional and relationship healing.

These properties are what make rose quartz so special:

Love

At its core, rose quartz is the stone of love. When we talk about love, we often think of romantic love—and while rose quartz has properties associated with romance, it also restores trust and harmony in all relationships. Known to deepen platonic relationships, vitalize our romantic lives, and amplify levels of self-love, it’s a must-have crystal.

Belonging to the water element, rose quartz embraces emotional depth and helps us let go of past traumas, dissolving negativity and helping us reach higher vibrations. It reminds us to let love in and is the perfect stone for mending broken hearts, repairing strained relationships, or calling in new ones.

Peace

Rose quartz reminds us to take it easy and lets us know we are exactly where we need to be. By promoting self-acceptance, it makes us feel at peace with ourselves and our insecurities, which translates into increased confidence and kindness.

Just as the Taurus zodiac is associated with comfort, beauty, and love, so it rose quartz. Accordingly, it’s linked to Tauruses and is a birthstone for Libras, as it elevates inner peace. In Ancient Egypt, the stone was believed to prevent aging, which is part of why it’s popularly used in beauty products including gua shas. Personally, I sleep with rose quartz under my pillow, which can encourage peaceful sleep and inspiration.

Hope

Rose quartz kindles hope in our hearts—hope for a kind and loving Universe. By restoring faith in unconditional love, this gemstone inspires us to maintain a positive outlook and enjoy the journey. It warmly reminds us that life’s short, so spending time with people we love, doing things that bring us joy, and embracing our passions is what really matters.

Joy

Importantly, rose quartz replaces low vibrations with love. In doing so, it enhances positive affirmations and brings us joy. When paired with citrine, a stone of abundance and wealth, rose quartz can attract new, exciting adventures and opportunities. The stone is feminine in nature and embodies goddess energy—the energy of love and life.

If you’re looking to fill your heart with more love, this soft, blushing crystal is for you. Rose quartz fosters love in every sense of the word: unconditional love, self-love, romantic love, family love, and platonic love. Browse our collection of rose quartz here.
